Mindfulness Stress Based Reduction

What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)?

MBSR is an evidence based, holistic psycho-educational program involving meditation, teaching, compassionate self-inquiry and group discussion.

It can help you:

  • Develop practical skills to access greater calm and self-compassion

  • Learn to manage difficult thoughts and emotions

  • Cope with stress, pain and/or illness by discovering how to access insight and kindness from within

  • Increase self-awareness and self-confidence, allowing for skillful decision-making

  • Enhance the body-mind connection for stress reduction and health improvement

This program has been delivered for over 40 years as prevention and treatment for depression, anxiety, stress & stress-related illnesses, autoimmune and chronic diseases and for those interested in proactively optimizing their health and wellness.

Format

  • Each session lasts 10 weeks (3 hour sessions weekly with additional 6 hour ‘retreat day’)

  • Sessions begin every January, April & September and are held in-person ONLY at Soul Centred Studio in Burlington (Brant St x Fairview St)

  • Attendance & active participation (willingness to experiment, dialogue and share) is required at all sessions

Cost

  • MBSR and all subsequent therapy groups are covered by OHIP provided you have ongoing care with a family doctor (referral no longer needed)

    • You may see other MBSR programs being offered at out of pocket cost, however this program is OHIP-covered because Dr. Ang is a licensed medical doctor (general practitioner- psychotherapist)

  • You must attend a minimum of 9 sessions to be eligible for the program.

Is MBSR Right for Me?

Participation in this program requires first and foremost, curiosity and a desire to explore.

You don’t need any experience with yoga or meditation, nor a specific diagnosis to participate.

Evidence suggests that the greatest learning/benefit comes to those participants willing/able to include 30-40 minutes of daily home based practice.

MBSR is also not a cure-all; and while it can be powerful tool for transformation, depending on your current health status and wellbeing, there may be reasons why a formal meditation program or the group setting may not be appropriate for you at this exact time.

To ensure that you are able to gain the most out of your commitment, all participants must be assessed by Dr. Ang (intake questionnaire and/or appointment). Once accepted, participation in the program is always your choice.
