TRAUMA-INFORMED YOGA

Module 1: Sensory Awareness + Yoga: The Missing Link for Trauma

Offered with Barb Leese & Yogashala Wellness Centre once a year
12 hours over Saturday/Sunday ( 12 pm - 6 pm)

  • Learn how and why yoga and sensory awareness are powerful tools to heal, support and resolve the effects of stress and trauma. Discover a trauma-informed approach to yoga that promotes healing, fosters agency and empowers you and others you are supporting.

Topics covered

  • Understand the science of trauma and how it impacts all human beings through the effects it has on our body, mind and nervous system.

  • Understand the benefits of yoga through the lens of contemporary neuroscience and psychotherapy

  • Experience body-based tools from yoga and somatic therapy to support the effects of stress on the nervous system

  • Learn how to embody a trauma-informed approach in your practice and teaching

Who Is This Training For?

  • We believe this training is relevant for any human being who experiences stress while navigating the ups and downs of life. Trauma is not an event, but a lasting response of the nervous system when we face an experience that overwhelms us.

  • Whatever your role – yoga practitioner, instructor, clinician, parent, friend or otherwise, this workshop will offer you a foundational understanding of how the trauma response shapes us and our life experience. As we begin to understand and identify the effects of traumatic stress on our own being, we become better able to support ourselves and others dealing with the impact of stress on our lives.

  • This workshop is Module 1 of a trauma-informed yoga teaching certification, but this module is geared towards all audiences, with a focus on the self-awareness required to facilitate trauma-informed practices. Continuing Education Credits are available for Yoga Alliance registered teachers.

Format

  • This is an interactive workshop combining education and experiential practices. We will explore a range of techniques including yoga, breathwork, meditation, somatics and self-inquiry.

  •

Module 2: Trauma-Informed Spaces: Facilitator/Teacher Certification

This 25-hour training offers an embodied exploration of how trauma impacts all human beings, and the role of sensory awareness and body-based interventions in supporting its resolution. Trauma and its aftereffects will be explored through the lens of yoga and Ayurveda, modern neuroscience, somatic therapy and sensorimotor psychology.

Topics covered

  • Understand how the experience of daily stress and traumatic events can impact the nervous system, leading to chronic physical, mental and energetic patterns

  • Discover how to utilize yoga asana, somatic techniques, breath/pranayama + meditative techniques to balance symptoms of over-activation (excess rajas) and freeze/shut-down (excess tamas)

  • Deepen your ability to support yourself in states of excess sympathetic (hyperarousal) and parasympathetic (hypoarousal) activity in ways that expand resilience

  • Learn how to utilize trauma-informed language, anchoring and presence-ing to support and address trauma responses when they arise in self, group and individual settings.

Who Is This Training For?

  • This training is particularly relevant for yoga instructors, healing arts professionals and facilitators, who will meet trauma in both group and individual settings and will cover approaches that can be applied to self-guidance, one-on-one settings and group environments.

  • This certification is a continuation of the “Sensory Awareness: The Missing Link to Trauma” training. Prior participation in the Sensory Awareness Modules is a suggested prerequisite, however, individuals may apply for a 'short-course (3 hour workshop) to be completed prior to the full 25 hour training.

  • This is not a certification teaching you how to heal trauma (This is best approached in a holistic, multi-disciplinary, requiring different scopes of practice). Rather, you will come to recognize how the aftereffects of trauma can show up in our everyday responses and the ways that yoga, somatics and one’s own embodied presence can be a resource to a challenged nervous system.

Format

  • 2 weekends (Friday 6 - 9:30 + Saturday 10 - 4:30), with online component in between

  • The curriculum for this training evolves to meet the specific needs, context and settings that are relevant for the group that gathers

  • We will explore a range of techniques including yoga, breathwork, meditation, somatics and self-inquiry.

  • Expect interactivity, combining education and experiential practices.

  • Practice teaching is an option, not a requirement
